The Spring Full Year Spearhead (FYSH) program, designed for students in grades 9 thru 12, successfully concluded its first spring semester. With 52 students enrolled in 12 courses over Spring 2025, the program served as a companion class to students taking challenging Honors and AP Math and Science courses at school. By teaching students course material 2-3 weeks before they learn it in school, course aimed to give students the tools to earn top GPAs, remain actively engaged in their classes, and stay ahead of the curve.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, students completed a six question, 5-point scale survey. The results reflect a highly positive experience across all key areas:
- Instructor Satisfaction: 4 / 5.0
- Instructor Knowledge: 5 / 5.0
- Class Engagement: 3.5 / 5.0
- Curriculum Quality: 3.5 / 5.0
- Satisfaction with Progress: 4 / 5.0
These scores indicate a consistent level of excellence in instruction, instructor knowledge, and student progress.
Student Reflections and Feedback
Student comments provided valuable insights into their learning experience. Small class size and once a week scheduling were cited as highlights of the course experience. Students were able to receive more specialized one-on-one support and were able to retain what they learned in class without being stressed about their school courses.
MEK instructors created an inclusive and participatory class environment that made students feel welcome and engaged with the course content.
Looking Ahead
Following the completion of this course, students are now prepared to advance to the next level of the FYSH Program, depending on their grade level and goals. The learning experience, strategies, and skills they’ve acquired serve as a strong springboard for future academic success that translates to their classes outside of MEK.
