Every year, students and parents ask the same question: which AP exams are the hardest? It’s a fair question — but the answer is more nuanced than a single ranked list. Here’s what the data actually shows, and what it means for your child’s course planning.
The Consistently Hardest AP Exams Nationwide
Across multiple national rankings that use pass rates (scores of 3+), 5-rates, and student feedback, the same subjects appear at the top year after year.
Top Tier: Universally Considered the Hardest
1. AP Physics 1
AP Physics 1 has the lowest pass rate among all AP exams — and it’s frequently cited by students and educators as the single hardest AP offered. Unlike many science courses, it covers conceptual physics without calculus, which means students can’t rely on formulas alone. Every question requires multi-step reasoning and the ability to apply concepts in unfamiliar scenarios.
Students who struggle most: those taking physics for the first time, and strong memorizers who haven’t developed conceptual thinking skills.
2. AP Physics C (Mechanics & Electricity/Magnetism)
AP Physics C is college-level, calculus-based physics — and the content is objectively harder than Physics 1. One important nuance: its pass rate is higher than Physics 1, but only because the pool of students who take it tends to be more advanced. It remains one of the most demanding AP exams, particularly for students whose calculus or algebra foundations aren’t solid.
3. AP Biology
AP Biology is often underestimated. The volume of content is massive, and the exam doesn’t just test memorization — it requires students to apply concepts, analyze data, and write strong free-response answers. The free-response section in particular trips up students who prepared primarily through reading and reviewing notes.
Very Challenging — But a Different Skill Set
4. AP English Language & Composition
AP English Language has one of the lowest 5-rates among popular AP exams. It demands timed rhetorical analysis, synthesis essays drawing from multiple sources, and a combination of high reading speed and sustained writing stamina. Students who are strong readers but weak writers — or strong writers who read slowly — often find this exam unexpectedly difficult.
5. AP English Literature & Composition
AP English Literature asks students to analyze dense, complex texts and write literary essays without a clear “right answer.” Grading involves a degree of subjectivity, and the limiting factor for most students is writing skill. Students who rely on plot summary rather than genuine literary analysis tend to struggle here.
Hard for Specific Students
6. AP Chemistry
AP Chemistry combines heavy math with abstract reasoning, and its concepts build on each other — meaning weak foundations in earlier material compound over time. It’s one of the most content-dense science exams offered.
7. AP Calculus BC
AP Calculus BC moves fast and covers significantly more material than Calculus AB. Students who enter with shaky algebra or pre-calculus foundations often find themselves falling behind early in the course.
8. AP Latin / AP Music Theory
Both AP Latin and AP Music Theory have very low pass and 5-rates. They require niche skill sets that most students haven’t built up over years of study, making them especially demanding for non-specialists.
So, Which AP Is the Hardest for Your Child?
There’s no universal answer. Difficulty is personal — it depends on whether your child’s strengths are math-based, language-based, or conceptual, and how strong their foundational skills are going into the course.
What we consistently tell families at MEK: the label of “hardest” matters far less than how well your child performs.
Colleges don’t reward students for taking the most difficult schedule imaginable. They reward students who demonstrate genuine academic excellence — strong grades, solid AP exam scores, and thoughtful course selection that reflects real interest and preparation.
Fewer AP courses taken well will always outperform a packed schedule of courses taken poorly.
