Frequently Asked Questions for Summer
Still on the fence about summer classes? At MEK, we want to give you the best experience possible, and we’re ready to address all your frequently asked questions and concerns!
What if my child can’t attend class due to travel, family functions, or other conflicting plans?
While our summer programs are 7 weeks long, we also offer registration on a week-by-week basis. Our programs are prorated, so you can sign up for as many or as few weeks as possible. That way, if you know you’ll be away during Week 5, for instance, you can easily skip it and not worry about losing money.
For most of our classes, the curriculum is also designed on a day-by-day basis. What this means is that each day has its own standalone curriculum. So if your child misses a class, they won’t feel like they’re behind the other students.
In general, we recommend the full 7-week program, but if that doesn’t work for your schedule, we understand here at MEK, and we want to accommodate all of your needs!
Do you offer make-up classes?
Yes, we do have a couple of different options if your child misses a class and wants to make it up. For starters, all our lectures are recorded, so you can always watch the lecture for the week you missed and still get all the information.
However, if you want to join a live class, we can accommodate depending on schedule and availability. If there’s space available in another live class that works for your schedule, your child can sit in and catch up on anything that they missed.
Can I change my child’s program plan after they’ve already started?
Yes, at MEK, we always want to make sure our students are in the best possible program for their needs. For that reason, we’re flexible when it comes to changes.
There are a few reasons someone might want to change their program plan:
- Your child’s progress isn’t as expected.
- Maybe the class is too easy or too difficult, and another class level might be more suitable.
- Your child finds that they don’t learn well with group classes, and private tutoring works better.
- The schedule no longer works for you and your family.
If any of those reasons apply to you, MEK is always willing to reassess and come up with another plan that works. Our students are assessed each week, based on their daily progress, so if we find that something isn’t working for them, we can make the necessary adjustments. MEK will create a better plan for your child, working side-by-side with you every step of the way. If private tutoring is a better option for you, we can help set that up as well.
When you decide to leave a class or transfer to a different one, your unused credit from the previous class will go towards the new class. Credits are valid for 1 year, so you can even put it towards a later class if you suddenly find that summer won’t work for you due to scheduling conflicts.
How much homework will my child have each week?
For MEK’s Learning Circles (MLC), students can expect about 45 minutes of homework per week.
For Honors and AP classes, students can expect about 1 to 1.5 hours of homework per week, but we also recommend taking extra time to study the material so that they’re fully prepared for the new school year.
In our SAT and ACT classes, the homework is a practice exam. For SAT and ACT Foundation, students are expected to take one practice exam per week. For SAT 1400 and 1500 and ACT 30 and 34, students will take two practice exams per week.
Do you offer office hours?
Yes, we offer 30 minutes of free office hours where students can meet with the teacher, depending on the teacher’s schedule.
How can I check my child’s progress?
You can always see how your child is progressing on Canvas. Parents have access to their child’s Canvas page and profile, where you can find all of their class information.
Can I meet with my child’s teacher?
You can meet with the Program Director to discuss any specific concerns.
To meet with the teacher, parents can request a meeting, depending on the individual teacher’s schedule and availability.
