Montage: MEK’s Creative Writing Workshop

Write your story with MEK.

Is your child interested in creative writing, or always writing stories? Maybe they are looking to take their creative writing aspirations to the next level by getting a story published! If this sounds like your child, then MEK has the perfect summer program!

This Summer, we are re-introducing our creative writing program, Montage, to our class line up.

Read on to learn more about Montage, the benefits for your child, and how to get started!

What is Montage?

Montage is MEK’s summer exclusive 7-week creative writing program for students in grades 5 through 9. This extracurricular course has students building their fiction writing skills, learning the writing process, and writing a story, of their own, that will be published in MEK’s short story collection, Montage.

Who is a good fit for this program?

Montage is recommended for students who:

  • Have taken and scored an 80% or higher on the MEK Learning Circles Evaluation Test
  • Have taken our MLC Critical Reading and/or MLC Writing courses
  • LOVE TO WRITE!

What are the benefits of the course?

Montage is all about cultivating the art of storytelling and craft. From this course, students will get writing, editing, and publishing experience that will build their academic resume in a fun, dynamic environment. They’ll meet new friends, learn new skills, and deepen their relationship with writing.

How is the course structured?

The weekly agenda for the course is as follow:

Week 1: Explore creative writing through example texts

Week 2: Brainstorm Story Topics

Week 3: How to Write about Challenges

Week 4: Share the 1st draft of your story!

Week 5: Revise Your Story!

Week 6: Choose the Perfect Title + How to Write the Perfect Prologue & Epilogue

Week 7: How to Publish Your Story

What if my child has to miss a class?

No problem! The Montage creative writing course is offered at a variety of different times both virtually and on our Closter campus with hybrid options available. So, if you can’t make a class, your child is more than welcome to attend class at a different time at either our Closter campus, or through our live, virtual class.

For students attending an alternate in-person class, please let us know your plans, and we will be happy to find a seat for your child!

Can’t make any alternate arrangements? That’s no problem either! We will send you a recording of the class your child missed.

What is the course schedule?

Montage is offered every Friday for 7 weeks beginning on Friday, July 12th

Course Schedule

8:30am | Grades 5 & 6

10:30am | Grades 7 & 8

1:00pm | Grades 5-7

Our Montage creative writing course is a class where every lesson builds on the one before it. Due to the nature of the final assignment, we require that students attend every class or make arrangements to attend an alternate class in the event of an absence.
