Planning Your 2024 Summer of Success: Grades 9-12

Planning Your 2024 Summer of Success: Grades 9-12

The summer is an essential time for students to grow: both academically and physically. While many parents will think of the summer as a time to recharge for the next academic year, the truth comes down to simple numbers.

The average school year is approximately 165 days, and the average summer break is 84 days. That means summer break is nearly half a school year! When you consider how much your child learns and grows in a semester, it becomes clear that summer break is very long! Summer break is too long to just be a time to recharge. We can even see this in our children, who ache for summer break but often become bored halfway through.

I’ve seen students grow a head taller over the summer. I’ve seen students change so much over summer break that I’ve hardly recognized them when they came back to MEK Review in the Fall! But just as children grow physically over the summer, they can develop tremendous academic growth too — if we give them the best resources to do so!

Grades 9-10: Build a strong foundation to gain and maintain a high GPA.

Students have about 4-6 weeks from the beginning of the school year to show their teachers that they are understanding class topics and performing well, after which they receive an interim report. That’s not a whole lot of time. And while, yes, the interim report is designed as a tool for students and parents to find out how well they are doing and how much more they need to work, it is also an indicator of how much the student enjoys and truly understands the subject.

But how can students know that they enjoy a subject after just a month of exposure? How can they understand it with such minimal time?

The trick is to go into the school year having mastered 60%+ of the material.

And that is exactly what you can do with High School Honors courses at MEK this summer!

Keep in mind: the greatest way to secure a strong college portfolio is to build and maintain a GPA that is as close to perfect as possible!

Below are the different ways you can plan your MEK Summer schedule, based on your academic goal:

Grade 9: Prepare for advanced high school courses, start high school on the right foot.

First, assess your academic strengths and weaknesses with an MEK Evaluation Test. MEK Evaluation Tests will tell you about your current ability to handle challenging honors-level topics and study habits.

Next, take a High School Honors course that corresponds to your 9th grade math and science courses! This way, you can step into high school on your first day both confident and prepared.

Also, did you know that your English and Language Arts performance in school is highly correlated to your SAT score? With our Core Reading & Writing class, you will be ready for BOTH your English class AND your future SAT/ACT exams. You can read about the correlation in the following two blog posts:

Grade 10: Focus on SAT/ACT Prep

All of the above recommendations still apply to 10th graders, but as they correspond to students’ 10th grade math and science courses. Plus, many students start to take AP courses in 10th grade, which they can prepare for with our Summer AP School Support Tutoring, also covering 60%+ of the AP curriculum before the first day of school!

But by this point, students will want to know which test to prepare for: SAT or ACT. While it is all up to the student’s personal preference, it is wise to make this decision based on your school performance. If you are not a STEM-inclined student, have not taken Honors Math & Science courses, and have not completed Algebra 2 comfortably, then the ACT will not be a wise option for you.

A common myth about the ACT is that it has an easier English section. While yes, it does have simpler texts, the ACT demands students to read and comprehend quickly, answering a greater number of questions in a relatively shorter amount of time.

If you have not started your test prep yet or have not developed many testing skills yet, the SAT is a better test to begin with. Pro tip: start your prep with the SAT and finalize it with the ACT to achieve a perfect score portfolio!
