How to Avoid Falling Behind This Summer

How to Avoid Falling Behind This Summer

Summer is a time for relaxation and fun in the sun! However, it’s also a time when many students fall behind in their academics. This leaves students struggling once the new school year begins, always playing catch up instead of living up to their full potential.

The average school year is approximately 165 days, and the average summer break is 84 days. That means summer break is nearly half a school year! When you consider how much your child learns and grows in a semester, it’s easy to see how such a long time away from school can push them backwards academically. While summer break is a great time to recharge, it’s too long to just be a time to recharge. We can even see this in our children, who ache for summer break but often become bored halfway through.

So you might be asking: What can I do to make sure my child stays ahead this summer? How can I make summer break a time for fun AND learning?

Lucky for you, MEK has a few solid tips to keep your child on the path to success this summer!

Create a summer study plan

First and foremost, it’s essential to have a plan for summer. While this could include summer camp, swim classes, or even trips to the beach, don’t forget to also make a plan for your child’s academics.

Review school material

This summer, it’s important for your child not to forget everything they’ve worked so hard to learn in the past year. Part of your study plan should include reviewing class material. Spending just 30 minutes a day reviewing class material will help keep your child’s mind sharp, refresh their memory, and place them ahead of most of their classmates.

To get a head start on the upcoming school year, it’s also helpful to review and pre-study the material from courses you’re planning to take. Since high schoolers already have their class schedule for next year, they can target their studies to those specific classes. One way to do so is through self-learning on the internet. You can watch video tutorials on YouTube or read MEK Review’s many free blog resources!

We also offer a number of summer classes that can help you get ahead in the new school year. We know that many students have summer plans already in place, like day camp, dance classes, or sports. That’s why MEK offers flexible scheduling and hybrid classes to fit around your schedule. Your child can go to summer camp in the morning and come straight to MEK after camp for one of our late afternoon classes! That way, you’re making the most of summer break.

Not sure what classes to take? If you’re currently in high school or starting high school in the fall, bring us your schedule for next year. We can come up with a plan together! Schedule a consultation today, and our expert academic counselors here at MEK will work with you to figure out the best course(s) for you this summer.

With MEK, we can give you a head start on the new school year and ensure you don’t fall behind. That way, when the new school year starts, you can focus on achieving that top GPA!

Prepare for standardized exams

After the school year begins, it becomes much more difficult to prepare for tests like the SAT, ACT, or high school admissions exams, on top of the schoolwork you already have. With all that work at once, it’s easy to fall behind. So why not use the summer to prepare?

With MEK’s SAT and ACT prep this summer, you can improve your score in just 7 weeks! Whether you’ve decided to take the SAT, ACT, or both, MEK can come up with a plan for you to prepare and reach your goal score.

We also offer practice exams/evaluation tests for high school admissions and more! So make a plan this summer to prepare for those exams.

Get to work on your summer reading list

Summer is a great time to get some reading done, especially on those beach trips while you’re laying out in the sun. Children who read just twenty minutes a day throughout the summer will maintain and boost their reading comprehension skills and grow their vocabulary. Reading also helps students build empathy, meet new characters, and travel to different worlds—which can make it an enriching and enjoyable experience!

For grades 4 through 8, our Critical Reading Circles are a great place for students to improve their reading skills!

Take a class at MEK

One surefire way to make sure your child stays ahead this summer is to sign up for MEK’s summer courses. We offer classes for all grade levels in a wide variety of subjects.

For grades 4 through 8, you can sign up for one of our MEK Learning Circles (MLC). We offer various levels of math, writing, critical reading, and non-fiction reading, in addition to our competition math courses.

For high schoolers, we offer SAT and ACT classes, in addition to SAT English Vocabulary and Difficult Question Math clinics for that extra push.

We also offer high school Honors and AP classes to get you ready for the new school year. In our Honors and AP classes, you’ll learn 65% of the course material before the school year even starts. This allows you to focus more on your assignments and GPA once the school year begins.

For students going into 8th grade, we recommend our extensive high school admissions prep program. This can prepare you for those challenging admissions exams and get you into the high school of your dreams.

This summer, we’re also offering various new electives like Coding in Python or Science Olympiad classes. These 7-week classes are great for your child to explore their interests and figure out what they excel in. This is especially important when applying to colleges.

And if you do better with one-on-one instruction, we offer private tutoring with our expert tutors here at MEK. No matter what your needs, we have a plan for you!

Make the most of your summer break!

Of course, students should take time to relax and recharge during summer break so that they’re refreshed for the new school year. But summer break is long enough for students to vacation, play sports, go to camp, volunteer, and still improve their academic skills. There’s enough time to do it all!

So give us a call at 855-346-1410 to schedule a consultation, and we can come up with the best summer plan for you and your child!
