SAT Core Reading and Writing
It is never too early to start preparing for the SAT. In fact, our data shows that MEK students who began preparing for the SAT in 9th and 10th grade with our SAT Core Reading and Writing program, scored in the top 1% of test-takers on the Reading and Writing section when they took the official SAT.
The goal of SAT Core Reading and Writing is to give 9th and 10th grade students a headstart on SAT preparation. Through this extensive preparation, we are also giving students the tools and proven strategies to receive top marks in their rigorous honors English classes.
How the Program Works
Through a 14 lesson module, students learn how to identify the variety of question types they will find on the SAT Reading and Writing section along with proven strategies for how to answer each question. Each lesson focuses on a different concept ranging from grammar to reading passages.
Courses are offered year round through group live virtual classes with additional self-guided assessments and office hours for supplementary support.
In fall and spring, students meet once a week for 3 hours for 14 sessions. They spend 90 minutes focused on learning strategies for the SAT Reading section and boosting their overall reading comprehension. They spend the other 90 minutes on learning grammar concepts to succeed on the SAT Writing section and improve their own writing skills.
In summer, the structure is the same, except students meet twice a week for 14 sessions over 7 weeks in June and July.
Students have weekly homework assignments and vocabulary quizzes that reinforce the lessons they are learning in class. They also periodically take a full-length SAT Reading & Writing test to assess their overall progress.
SAT Core Math
For the past few years, 9th and 10th grade students have successfully built English and Language Arts skills through early test prep in SAT Core Reading & Writing. We are bringing a similar approach to math so students can get an early start to their test prep process.
Current 9th graders spent middle school in the virtual classroom, where math weaknesses have given way to lack of confidence. This lack of confidence eventually appears in the test-taking realm through difficulty in applying learned materials to different types of questions.
SAT Core Math rebuilds these shaky math foundations from the bottom up. By putting these concepts into the context of the test, students will not only have the tools to ace their exams, but also perform well in their school math classes.
How the Program Works
Through a 14 lesson module, students learn to enhance their Common Core-aligned math application and classroom skills. They develop a strong number sense and algebraic understanding and learn to correctly interpret these concepts to solve challenging word problems.
SAT Core Math is for students in the 9th grade taking Algebra, or in the 10th grade taking Geometry. The course consists of 14 sessions and 3 practice SAT exams. This course is available through live virtual group classes year around.
In the fall and spring, students meet once a week for 90 minutes. In the summer, they meet twice a week for 7 weeks over the months of June and July.
Students have weekly assignments that reinforce the lessons they are learning in class. They also periodically take a full-length SAT Math test to assess their overall progress.
