Spring 2022: What’s New for Grades 9-12?

Spring 2022: What’s New for Grades 9-12?

In 2021, we introduced many new elements to the MEK program–elements that we added in confidence that they would make MEK more MEK-like. Amidst the prolonging of the COVID-19 pandemic, we brought students back on-site to alleviate fatigue. To manage our virtual classes better, we implemented Canvas.

But we realized this Fall that that was simply not enough. We realized that maybe we need to rethink the MEK way. And in doing so, redefine ourselves for the new normal.

The new normal doesn’t just consist of the normalization of remote work and learning and going to school in a mask. The new normal is shortened attention spans, lower retention of learned material, and weakened problem-solving skills.

This Spring, in our 25th year, MEK is catering to the new normal so that we can provide guidance to students of all skill levels. We will provide guidance, direction, and support to all students who need MEK.

SAT Core Math | Grades 9-10

New this Spring is SAT Core Math!

For the past few years, 9th and 10th grade students have successfully built English and Language Arts skills through early test prep in SAT Core Reading & Writing. This Spring, we are bringing a similar approach to math so students can get an early start to their test prep process.

Current 9th graders spent middle school in the virtual classroom, where math weaknesses have given way to lack of confidence. This lack of confidence eventually appears in the test-taking realm through difficulty in applying learned materials to different types of questions.

SAT Core Math is designed to rebuild these shaky math foundations from the bottom up. By putting these concepts into the context of the test, students will not only have the tools to ace their exams, but also perform well in their school math classes.

SAT Core Math is for students in the 9th grade taking Algebra, or in the 10th grade taking Geometry. The course is comprised of 14 sessions and 3 practice SAT exams. This course will be available in both in-person and virtual settings.

Redesigned SAT Foundation | Grades 10-11

Students in SAT Foundation are students who are willing to work toward their SAT goals in order to reach their college dreams. Within this new normal within the virtual classroom, we studied the ways that we need to change our curriculum to cater to a wider range of starting points.

We will be making the following key improvements to our SAT Foundation course:

  • Stronger emphasis on building Algebraic skills
  • Daily exercises to increase attention span and promote development of study routine
  • Constant contextualization of learning material to encourage students to take ownership of their learning

SAT Foundation will be 16 sessions long, twice weekly for 8 weeks. This redesigned SAT Foundation course will open to students in January, offering the same winning class structure with improved materials and teaching strategies.
