MEK Tutoring Programs: Must-Know Guide

MEK Tutoring Programs: Must-Know Guide

At this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, things that were initially considered temporary adjustments have become lifestyle and the New Normal. Facemasks have become part of our daily outfits and our home offices have become our permanent places of work. Everything seems to be getting easier to adjust to… with the exception of the virtual school classroom.

MEK’s Tutoring Programs are designed with these limitations in mind! Read below to see how our One-on-One Tutoring Programs are designed and how they can best fit your needs.

MEK Tutoring Programs

The MEK Tutoring Programs are split into three programs: Private Test Prep, School Support Tutoring, and Academic Enrichment Tutoring. The three programs ensure that our tutoring programs can accommodate students of all different needs.

Why MEK Tutoring Programs?

MEK Tutoring Programs give students the tools to make constant progress and maintain it. After all, the most important part in any learning progress is maintenance.

Our tutors work closely with students to ensure that they are getting the guidance they need, and they are in constant communication with administrators and counselors to critically assess student needs with every step of the way.

The COVID Classroom

With the severe limitations of the COVID classroom, even students with strong study skills and habits are left in the dark when it comes to classroom guidance. Teachers are often not as approachable as they once were, as it’s not as easy to go to them for extra help after class. So students need to be extra active and extra cognizant about their own gaps in understanding.

Quote from Ann Ahn, Head Academic Counselor

Students who are not confident about identifying their own weaknesses often face frustrations when they aim to maintain or raise grades in a class. That’s where our School Support Tutoring program comes in. At weekly or twice-weekly tutoring sessions, students work with their tutor to go over their school curriculum and identify the areas that they need to spend more time studying. With this guidance and additional reinforcement exercises and lectures, students are better equipped to stay on top of the classroom lectures, to participate more actively in classroom discussions, and to perform higher on assessments and exams.

The Discontinuation of SAT Subject Tests

College Board’s discontinuation of SAT Subject Tests has thrown many students into confusion as they navigate through changes in their test prep plan. The discontinuation has also taken away one highly effective method in which students can show their mastery in certain essential subjects and their academic passions. But there is still always a way!

With the elimination of one factor of admissions, GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and AP scores have even greater weight in the college application review process.

Quote from Pranav Gupta, Director of the Subject Prep & H.S. Admissions

This means that students need to do even better in school and on their SAT or ACT to have an edge in their college applications. As mentioned in the above section, with School Support Tutoring, students can stay on top of their schoolwork. But Academic Enrichment Tutoring is available for students who want to get ahead and ensure future success.

On top of that, students can work with one-on-one tutors through Private Test Prep so that they make progress at their own pace. With the tried-and-true curriculum of MEK College Test Prep combined with the individualized attention and regular critical student assessment, Private Test Prep has led countless students to their goal scores and beyond on SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

How to Get Started

Steps to Get Started for Each Tutoring Program

Step 1: Inquiry

The first step to getting started with any of our programs is to contact us. Fill out the Inquiry Form and specify in the box labeled “Tell us how we can help you” that you are interested in one of the tutoring programs! You can also email us directly or call us at 855-346-1410.

Step 2: Student Assessment

If you are interested in Private Test Prep, the first step will be to take an evaluation test, which can be taken either virtually or on-site at our Closter campus. The test will be proctored with real test time constraints to evaluate student performance most accurately. You can sign up for a test event, but if you do not see that we are currently hosting an event that corresponds to the exam for which you are seeking guidance, please specify in the Inquiry Form and our administrators will contact you to make specific arrangements.

After the evaluation test, you will be scheduled for a consultation with our expert academic counselors to accurately assess student needs based on the evaluation test results and student goals.

If you are interested in School Support Tutoring or Academic Enrichment, you will go straight to the consultation! You will be asked to provide the following materials before the consultation so our academic counselors can plan accordingly:

  • School transcript
    • Report cards or print-outs of your grade management portal (i.e. PowerSchool, Genesis, Skyward) are sufficient if you do not have access to your transcript!
  • A clear idea of your academic goals!

Step 3 & 4: Individualized Tutoring Plan & Scheduling

Based on the information given and the goals discussed during the consultation, our academic counselors will design your Individualized Tutoring Plan with personalized milestones. These milestones will give light to the number and frequency of sessions, any specific weekly goals or performance indicators, and regular Simulation Tests and/or Independent Study Hall times as needed.

Weekly Simulation Tests

Private Test Prep students are scheduled to take weekly simulation tests to practice test taking skills and regularly assess their progress, which they can take virtually or on-site. Using the scores and score reports that you receive with each simulation test, tutors and academic counselors evaluate whether you are on the right track, and Tutoring Plans are adjusted if necessary. This way, you are always challenged in the right pace and direction.

Independent Study Hall

Not all tutoring students are prescribed Independent Study Hall. However, it has proved helpful in giving students a structured time to complete assessments and assignments to reinforce their learning in the tutoring session. During Independent Study Hall, you will log into a Zoom meeting, where a proctor is waiting for you. The proctor will make sure that you are completing the work that your tutor has assigned, within the time that they specified. The proctor will also be available to answer any logistical questions you may have about your tutoring session.

Virtual vs. In-Person Tutoring

MEK offers two methods of tutoring for all programs: virtual and in-person. Our virtual tutoring sessions are hosted on Zoom and facilitated by Google Classroom so that students can meet with their tutors in live sessions and communicate with them between sessions as needed.

Our in-person tutoring sessions take place at our Closter campus, where our Tutoring Suites are designed so that students and tutors can be in physical and visual proximity without physical exposure. The in-person tutoring sessions allow students to be more engaged in an environment that is not limited to the four walls of the computer screen.

Take advantage of our Tutoring Program today! Both virtual and in-person tutoring sessions are limited in capacity, so don’t wait!

Fill out the following interest form, and we’ll get back to you within 3 business days.
